2010 Program
The 2010 Fisher Memorial Program was held on April 23, 2010 at the Spring Meeting of the ABA Business Law Section in Denver, CO.
The topic was “Shifting Sands in the Culture of Consumer Financing.”
The program discussion attempted to identify and understand changes in the culture of consumer financing, by focusing on fundamental shifts in consumer behaviors and mindsets brought on by the market meltdown. It also considered this sea change in connection with regulation, consumer protection and the development of creditor’s products that meet the new demands by consumers. Subtopics included:
- The “New Federalism” – the rise of state regulation and enforcement
- What do consumers expect and want
- What role did consumer financing behavior have in the market meltdown
- Paternalism v. free choice – where’s the line
- What role does consumer credit play in the rebound from the recession
- What is “consumer credit” in the new economy
- Has disclosure, as a means of consumer protection, failed
- What effect, if any, will limiting access to credit have on the economic recovery
